What is DP Locker?

DP Locker provides permanent, secure online storage for your digital photos.

Why DP Locker?

Imagine a shoebox of old photos in your grandmother’s closet. Although photo prints may seem antiquated compared to the high-resolution digital photos of today, they actually have several benefits:

Prints are standalone physical items, so you don’t need any special equipment (such as a computer or smartphone) to view them.
Prints don’t need any special expertise to preserve. They can be left unattended in a shoebox for decades. While they may fade slowly over time, the deterioration will be visible and obvious, unlike magnetic storage media that fail invisibly and must be regularly upgraded and copied to preserve their contents.
Prints don’t become technically obsolete. Paper has been around for thousands of years, but digital storage media can become obsolete and unreadable in only a few years. Think back to the ubiquitous floppy disks from the 1980s and ’90s. Can your current computer read them? Many new computers today don’t have CD drives, so how can they read backup CDs that are only a few years old?

Of course digital photography also has many benefits which is why it has almost completely replaced film photography:

Once you’ve paid for your digital camera or smartphone, taking photos costs nothing compared to the expense of buying and developing film.
Digital photographs can be shared instantaneously from your smartphone or via internet applications such as email or Facebook.
Provided they’re properly backed up, digital photo files will never fade and can be protected against physical loss such as flood, fire or theft.

The purpose of DP Locker is to be an online shoebox for the age of digital photography, combining the benefits of digital photography with the longevity of prints and negatives from the age of film photography.

How Does DP Locker Work?

Any digital photo you upload or email to your DP Locker account will be saved permanently and securely. (Your photo files aren’t downsized or “enhanced”, they’re stored bit-for-bit exactly as you uploaded them.) You can download your original, full size photos from your DP Locker account at any time.

Every photo uploaded to DP Locker is automatically replicated and stored in geographically distributed locations to protect against data corruption and physical catastrophe.

How Much Does DP Locker Cost?

DP Locker is completely free to try. Sign up for your account and receive 1 GB of free storage. (That’s enough to store 250 4 MB high-resolution smartphone or DSLR photos.) There’s no trial time limit and your account will never expire.

Once you’ve tried out DP Locker and decided that you’d like more storage space, just make a one-time payment of $100 for an additional 5 GB of storage space (enough to store another 1,250 4 MB images). Beyond that, pay a 50% discounted rate of just $10 per 1 GB of extra storage space.

With DP Locker you only pay for the space you use, and you only pay once. (No monthly or annual payments!)
